Research shows that good communication is an important building block of strong family relationships. Make time every day to connect with your child.
In Your Home
- Ask your child about his day.
- Don't be afraid to say you don't know the answer to your child's questions. Find out together.
- Respect your child's individuality.
- Think before you respond, and choose your words carefully.
- Talk with your child honestly and respectfully.
- Give your child time to respond to questions. Sometimes it takes him a moment to think about what to say.
In Your Neighborhood
- Get involved with your child's school by attending PTA meetings and volunteering.
- Take time to read and talk with your child on the subway, the bus, or on your walk home.
- Talk to your child about your values and the community issues that are important to you.
In Your Library
- Explore books and the internet together.
- Encourage your child's interests and independence by letting him select his own books.
