"Space Stations," a series of
six drawing by Vargas-Suarez Universal, is on view in the Lobby Gallery
of Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library at Grand Army Plaza
through June 27. The series uses destroyed experimental architecture as
a starting point for experimental drawings. Universal uses the
structures and site plans from the 1939 and 1964 New York World’s
Fairs, which are now destroyed, for the creation of his "Space
Stations" series.
The drawings attempt to propose the
reconstruction of parts, or entire sections of the spaces, as possible
future design elements for international space stations as well as space
travel vehicles. Universal’s work is rooted in the modern sensibility
of design improvisation, transformation and interpretation of how space
is utilized. Working with architectural design structures provides
Universal with the chance to observe society’s role as builder,
destroyer and dreamer.
"Exhibiting at Brooklyn Public
Library reinforces the notion of research and the search for
knowledge," said Universal. "Much of the source material I
work with comes from books, reference materials and periodicals. The
fact that the drawings are being exhibited in this setting reflects on
the circular paths information can take on its way to becoming
art."
Universal was born in Mexico City and
raised near NASA in Houston. His works have appeared in numerous solo
exhibitions, including "Texas Landscape," Altelier von David
Medalla, Berliner Kunstler Prograam des DAAD, Berlin (1998);
"Blueprints & Space Stations," g-module, Paris (2002); and
two exhibitions upcoming in 2003 at the Jersey City Museum, Jersey City
and site specific installation, University of Essex, England. His group
shows include "Crossing the Line," Queens Museum of Art,
Flushing Meadows, New York (2001); "London Biennale 2000,"
Fleet Place, London; "Good Business is the Best Art: Twenty Years
of the Artist in the Marketplace Program," The Bronx Museum of the
Arts, Bronx, New York (2000); and "Dona Nelson, Andreij
Monastyrskij, Vargas-Suarez Universal, Tom Wood," Thomas Erben
Gallery, New York (2000); and "Think…1.2.3.Think: Rupert
Goldsworthy, Jocelyn Taylor, Vargas-Suarez Universal," im niL,
Greenpoint, Brooklyn (2001).
